Membership Draw 2019
Congratulations Alison Thorson, the winner of 4 admission tickets TO A VANCOUVER CANADIANS BASEBALL GAME in our 2019 Membership Draw.
Thank you to all our families who have purchased or renewed their memberships, your support is greatly appreciated.
 
Annual membership runs from May 1st to April 30th and cost $45 per year.
Membership fees are a crucial part of our annual revenue to continue our Family Drop-In program, parent education workshops, special events and seasonal celebrations.
 
In order to meet our fundraising goal, we need 333 families to purchase/ renew their membership. We continue to accept payment via cash, cheque or credit card.

Executive Director’s Summer Report
 
June, July and August at the Family Drop in and the Early Years Refugee Program are generally quieter months for our programs.  However, we also host several fun outdoor celebrations that we invite all families to participate, including a Canada Day celebration, Aboriginal Day outing, and a summer picnic in Robson Park.  During the month of June we will welcome Anna, this year’s summer student who comes highly recommended by Reneet our summer student from last year.  Anna will be with us for 8 weeks, spending 3 days week at the Early Years Refugee Program and 2 days at the Family Drop-In.  Please join me in welcoming her to our MP Family Centre Society staff family.
In other news we are pleased to report that the new MCFD funded, Creekside Baby Drop-In program, co facilitated by Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society staff is busy and running smoothly. Looking forward, I would like to invite all those interested in joining our Board of Directors to contact me directly at

Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society is accepting applications for the following position:

FSW-Adult Program/Children’s Program– Casual

Role Overview

The Family Support Worker in the Adult Program and Children’s Program-is a member of the staff team who is required to work on call M-Thu and some Saturdays as required. This position(s) works closely with other family support staff at the centre according to ‘best practice’ in Family Resource Programs and provides a safe and inclusive environment for all families. This position is reporting to the Program Manager.

Specific Accountabilities

Family Support

  • Creates and maintains a welcoming, emotionally safe, respectful and inclusive environment.
  • Model positive adult-child interactions that promote intellectual, social and emotional healthy development.
  • Works with other staff to coordinate, plan, implement and evaluate a full range of age and developmentally appropriate playroom activities (includes fine and gross motor activities, free and imaginative play, family circle time).
  • Ensure sign in sheets contain families required information.
  • Works with children in small groups and 1-1 as appropriate to encourage optimal development.
  • Creates opportunities for parents, grandparents and caregivers to acquire and practice positive parenting skills in a safe supportive environment.
  • Maintains appropriate health and safety standards in the adult area and playroom.
  • Works with staff team to maintain appropriate supplies and resources for the playroom.

People & Program Leadership

  • Ensure the Adult Program/Children’s Program area is a welcoming, respectful, safe and inclusive environment.
  • Liaises with the Program Manager in making referrals to community resources and in promoting and supporting parent-helping-parent initiatives as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of special events programs as required.
  • Fulfills other duties as required to ensure running of centre programs.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Early Childhood Education Certification preferred
  • Relevant degree or equivalent training and 5 years’ experience working with young children and families.
  • Valid First Aid Certification
  • A working knowledge and understanding of issues and concerns affecting young children 0-6 and their families. Demonstrated ‘best practice’ in supporting the healthy development of young children.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize children’s developmental needs, and to interpret these effectively and with sensitivity to parents.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills (English- oral and written).
  • Must be able to work comfortably in a cross cultural, multilingual setting. Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse populations and needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in projects, as well as, an ability to work flexibly as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in a drop-in setting an asset.
  • Knowledge and commitment to the principles and practices of Family Resource Programs and family centered care
  • Ability to work in a non-structured environment
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the family
  • Possession of non-judgmental and genuinely positive attitudes (culture, religion, sexuality, special needs) and freedom from stereotypes

Working Conditions

  • The position is a casual/on call position.
  • On call for M-Thu and Saturdays as required
  • Maybe required to sit on the floor, get up and down with babies in arms, and to set up and move equipment and furniture around.

Since this position works directly with children, a criminal records check is required upon hire, and a valid First Aid Certificate will also be required. The position is paid on an hourly basis.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WINTER REPORT
 

March is a month when we feel that spring is around the corner and with it all the joy and anticipation of new beginnings. Personally, I am excited about March 7th when we host a new version of our annual fundraiser, Savour Our Neighbourhood, and we share a fun evening with many of our members and community partners.  Through this event the staff and Board enjoy being introduced to new friends and community members while we raise funds to support the many services we offer through our programs. This year we are fortunate to have over 40 silent auction items that have been donated to our cause as well as 4 fantastic live auction items that we will be offering at the event.  Our goal for the evening is to raise $20,000, so if you haven’t bought your tickets, there is still time….just click here Tickets

Family Drop-In

February 1st- March 22nd, Fridays: 9:30 - 11:30 AM we are running Gordon Neufeld workshop at Family Centre. Childcare is provided in the playroom. For more information, please contact Flora at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
March 4 AM, Monday: A Public Health Nurse will visit the playroom. Any parents that have any questions for the nurse are welcome to attend.
March 7 - 8, Thursday and Friday: We are closed.
March 6 – 13, Wednesdays: 1:45 PM - 2:15 PM during afternoon Drop-In. Come sing, dance and play with Adam in our playroom. Family participation is required.
March 13 PM, Wednesday: A Public Health Nurse will visit the playroom. Any parents that have any questions for the nurse are welcome to attend.
Thursday -Baby drop- in: 1-3 PM we welcome pre-crawling babies and their parents to join us for play, songs, and socializing. Please enter through the upstairs playroom door.
April/ May – Friday mornings: Nobody’s Perfect is a parent support education group that allows parents to get a better understanding of their children’s development and meet other parents. Circles of Care & Connection Program
 
Come visit our Family Drop-In Program, located at the ISSofBC Welcome Centre, 3rd floor playroom, 2610 Victoria Drive.
Drop-In Hours: Monday to Wednesday from 9:30 - 11:30 AM & from 1:00 - 3:00 PMMarch 5 - March 26, Tuesdays: 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM. Sound, Movement, and Play is a fun folk song approach developed by the Living Language Institute that engages children and their parents and caregivers  in singing, movement and social play. It is easy and fun to participate for parents and their young children! Room 101.
March 7 - 8, Thursday and Friday: All programs are closed.
March 13, Wednesday:  2 PM - 3 PM. A Public Health Nurse Visit from Evergreen Community Health Centre will visit the playroom. Any parents that have any questions for the nurse are welcome to attend.
March 20, Wednesday: 1 PM - 3 PM. A Certified Dental Assistant will be in the playroom for children who have not had any regular dental check ups.
 
Dear Members,
As you may know, we are hosting our annual fundraiser Savour Our Neighbourhood on Thursday March 7th  at the Heritage Hall on Main Street.  This is a critical fundraising effort by our Board to ensure our sustainability and for those of you unable to attend but who want to contribute we are hosting a mini silent auction from Monday, March 4 to Wednesday March 6 at the Family Drop in.   Auction items include a White Spot gift pack, a family pack to the Carousel Theatre, a Purdy’s gift basket, and a yummy gift basket from Terra Breads. 
To place your bid on items offered in this mini silent auction, please visit the Family Drop in before 3pm on Wednesday March 6th.  A remember, there are still a limited number of tickets for Savour Our Neighbourhood available on eventbrite !  We hope to see you there!Thank you for your continued love and support!
