NFW2014 VerticalIt costs a lot of money to support a family and everyone needs as much help as they can get. Today we have a bit of information about Education & Training Savings Plans as well as the Humanomics Youth Savings Account.

Families in British Columbia are encouraged to start planning and saving early for their children’s post-secondary education or training program. To help, the B.C. Government will contribute a grant of $1,200 to eligible children through the BCTES grant. You can find out more details about the grant here and you can watch a short informative video here.

The Humanomics Youth Savings Account offer is available for a limited time at participating Humanomics credit unions. These accounts are for 11 or 12 year olds. They must open the account in their own name, with a deposit of $25, or a recurring monthly deposit of $10 for three months. On the account's first year anniversary, there's a bonus of 20%*. By the third year, there's a bonus of 5%*. That’s up to $125 for free. You can find out more information on the Humanomics website (they also have a short informative video, too).

The text of the Proclamation above (for those interested):

Whereas Family Places (also known as Family Resource Programs FRPs) make a difference in the lives of families with young children and build healthy relationships and community networks;

And Whereas Family Places work with their communities on different levels to address issues around family support, settlement, parenting, early childhood development, isolation, advocacy, and community;

And Whereas Family Places provide opportunities for families to come together to learn, share, network, and support each other;

And Whereas Family Places are active in their efforts to find support to run their many family-focused programs and services;

And Whereas Families and caregivers with young children (ages 0 to 6), volunteers and community partners, come together to create healthy, caring, and inclusive communities for everyone;

And Whereas Our communities are better places in which to live when families have opportunities to form healthy relationships and build community;

Now, Therefore, I, Gregor Robertson, Mayor of the City of Vancouver, Do Hereby Proclaim Thursday, October 9th as

Family Place Day in the city of Vancouver.

NFW2014 VerticalDental Workshop Tomorrow! (October 8) Our local Community Health Dental Team will be visiting both drop-in sessions. They will be available to take a look at your child's teeth and answer any questions you might have about oral hygiene.

Why is caring for these little baby teeth so important? Here is an answer from Vancouver Coastal Health's Dental Program website: "Healthy baby teeth will help your baby eat foods, learn to talk, smile and feel good about themselves as well as hold spaces for the adult teeth.  It is easy for babies and children to get tooth decay so parents need to do daily mouth care for their babies right from the start.  Your baby's teeth are already forming before he or she is even born."

You can find answers to more dental health questions here!

NFW2014 VerticalThis week is National Family Week! To celebrate this special week, we will be posting daily to our blog and to our Facebook page various topics that families might find interesting. We begin the week with thoughts and opportunities related to mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one's attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment, which can be trained by meditational practices derived from Buddhist anapanasati. As parents, it can be very difficult to be mindful and present because there are so many distractions and stresses pulling our focus.

The Dalai Lama is returning to Vancouver to engage and inspire prominent thought leaders from business, education and the community to ‘be the village’ to expand a focus on heart-mind well-being in children and youth in British Columbia. We have two free tickets to this conversation taking place on Tuesday 21 October, 2014. We are collecting names of those interested and able to attend this event. At the end of the week, we will draw a name out of all those collected.

Also, the Mount Pleasant Family Centre is part of the Windows of Opportunity Early Childhood Development Table, the participants of which hope to put on a Heart-Mind Conference for families in 2015. Until we have more information about this conference, we encourage you to take on the Heart-Mind Challenge and let us know about your experience!
