Special programs at CCC - 3rd Floor Playroom, 2610 Victoria Drive:
Tuesdays, until April 3: 1:30 - 2:30 PM Sound, Movement, and Play is a fun folk song approach developed by the Living Language Institute that engages children and their parents and caregivers  in singing, movement and social play.  It is easy and fun to participate for parents and their young children! 
Wednesdays, until April 11: 1:00-3:00PM Healthy Together is an innovative and unique family education program that brings families together to learn to make healthy choices and build healthy relationships. It is offered thanks to financial contribution from the Public Health Agency of Canada. To register please call Sanja, 778 372 6552.

Lost and Found
Have you lost something? Please check out the Lost and Found bin next time you are at the Family Centre. There are many things that need to be claimed such as hats, diaper bags, hoodies and enviro mugs. If you don't know where the Lost and Found bin is, please ask a staff and they will direct you to its location.

December at the Family Centre 
December 7, Thursday: 10 AM  - 1 PM Winter Celebration Party at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House - 800 East Broadway. Activities include a walk through winter wonderland, crafts, cookie decorating, face painting and music. Feel free to bring a seasonal treat (finger food only please). The Family Centre will be CLOSED on this day, including the afternoon Baby Drop-In.

The Baby Drop-In Program will be open Thursday Dec. 14th for the last session before the holidays. Program will reopen on January 5, 2017.

The last day for Family Drop-In is Thursday, December 21 - AM Drop-In only.
December 21 (afternoon) - January 1:
 The Family Centre will be CLOSED for Winter Holidays. We will be reopen on Tuesday, January 2 with regular program hours.

Survey Results
Thank you to those who filled out our annual survey.  We appreciate all your feedback. Here are some program responses to your inquiries and statements:

For Family Drop-In Program 
1. More books that describe diverse families
- Staff will be purchasing some new books for the child and adult library. Stay tuned! Any parent suggestions are always welcomed.
2. Infant Program 2 times a week - We are unable to expand our program due to funding and time, however, here are some other Baby Drop-In and Regular Family Drop-In Programs in the community:
- You and your infant are welcome to attend our regular drop-in hours, where we provide a baby space downstairs and babies can go upstairs during singing time.
- Raven Song Community Health Centre
- Creekside Community Centre - Infant Sing and Grow Program (scheduled program)
- Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House - Just Play! Family Drop-In
3. Garden program outside - We do offer a family garden program in the summer. We usually look for interested families in the spring via newsletter or face to face. Please talk to Flora if you are interested in gardening.
4. Parents could re-do some parenting courses - Please talk with staff regarding specific interest.
- Retaking in the Circle of Security and Neufeld courses is possible. 
- Nobody's Perfect Program is set up for one time only due of funding. Please ask staff if you have any queries that come up regarding parenting challenges.
- We also need to acquire more funding in order to expand parenting group times.
5. Name tags - Staff is taking this into consideration. Thank you!

For Circles of Care & Connection Program 
1. Please expand your program for children older than 6 years
In partnership with Boys and Girls Club and ISS of BC, the program for Tweens is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
2. 
Please extend the hours of the program
We are  currently unable to extend the hours due to funding, please check with staff about  programs for families offered by other agencies
3. English classes that can teach our kids the letters in English and Arabic would be amazing, if possible
More English songs and activities would help us to improve English language skills
Staff will continue developing new appropriate language activities for children.
5. 
I wish you can do a workshop on grocery shopping. Sometimes after I buy things I discover they are different from what I wanted.
We have started planning our 2018 parenting/settlement workshops, several workshops on nutrition/grocery shopping will be offered next year.

Pumpkin Patch at Drop-In
On October 31, children went to our pumpkin patch in the yard and went upstairs to decorate their pumpkin. Check out their creations below and one of the many families that dressed up!
Are you handy or know someone who is?
We are  looking for a volunteer who is handy that can help out with fixing little things at the Mount Pleasant Family Centre. Vancouver Family Place Day is October 9!
October 9, Monday: ThanksgivingDay The Family Centre will be CLOSED.
October 10, Tuesday: In honour for Vancouver Family Place Day, there will be a special craft families can do together. Hope to see you there!

October 17, Tuesday: 5:30 - 7:30 pm Annual General Meeting All current members are welcome to join us for a potluck dinner provided by the existing Board Members) upstairs in the playroom. After dinner, the adults will go downstairs for the meeting and the children will stay upstairs to play with the childcare providers. Please register your attendance by calling the Family Centre 604-872-6757 and include your name, your child(ren)'s names and ages and your member number.

Your Membership Counts! 
Annual membership runs until May 2018, and costs $45. Membership fees are a much needed part of our annual revenue and help fund our Family Drop-In program, parent education, workshops, special events and seasonal celebrations. Membership is an integral part of community participation and an effective way to contribute to our sustainability. If you did not have a membership or renewed, please go directly to our membership page. To renew your membership please go to CanadaHelps.org. When you visit the Family Centre, you can pay using cash, credit card, or cheque. Please speak to our staff and they will help you.

In September, our Welcome to Canada – Early Learning and Family Support Group will be even more fun than usual. The program runs from Monday to Wednesday1:00 to 3:00 pm in our playroom located on the 3rd floor at Welcome Centre, 2610 Victoria Drive.
 
The Conversation Circles program will continue on Mondays so that parents who came to Canada as refugees can practice English while their children participate in our early childhood development program.
 
On September 13 (Wednesdays), the new Healthy Together Program starts. Healthy Together is an innovative and unique family education program that brings families together to learn how to make healthy choices and build healthy relationships. It is offered thanks to financial contribution from the Public Health Agency of Canada. Let’s learn, move, cook, and eat together! Space is limited, to register please call 778 372 6552 after September 8, 2017.
 
On September 19, (from 1:30pm to 2:30) the Sound, Movement and Play Program starts again. Through this fun folk song approach developed by the Living Language Institute, children and their parents/caregivers are engaged in singing, movement and social play.

August picnic at Robson Park
Our annual picnic at Robson Park was a great success. On August 17th, MPFCS welcomed families from our Drop-In and Circles of Care and Connection Early Years Refugee Program. Everyone enjoyed playing the outdoors games, art making, face painting, the pinata and meeting other families. The highlight of the day was singing Happy Birthday to our long standing volunteer Janice.

IMPORTANT - User Fee Update
Starting from September 1, we will be implementing a Family Drop-In fee:
 $2 per visit for members
 $5 per visit for non-members

Family Daycares, Nannies, Babysitters, and Friends
For each visit:
$2 Drop-In fee per child with membership
$5 Drop-In free per child without membership

If you bring 3 children, Providers need to write the day of your visit on the white board near entrance (Limit 1 Provider per day).

August Calendar
August 7, Monday: We will be CLOSED because it is BC Day!
August 16, Wednesday10AM to 2PM, we will move our Drop-In Program outside at Robson Park! Don't forget to bring your snack/lunch and your picnic blanket! Activities include face-painting, crafts, bubbles, painting on the fence, games and a piñata. Please note we will be closed after 2 PM. * Please bring some individually wrapped candies before August 16 for the pinata! In case of rain, this event will be cancelled and we will have normal drop-in hours.
 
Musqueam Outing

On Wednesday, June 21, our families and staff went to the
Musqueam Reserve to celebrate National Aboriginal Day!
 
Canada Day Event

Goodbye Mij and Alice!
We will be saying goodbye to Mij and Alice in August. Since their arrival, they have been highly supportive in our Family Drop-In Programs, as well as, assisting in planning for our summer events. The Mount Pleasant Family Centre staff would like to thank them for all their support, creativity and positive demeanor these past months. We wish them well in their future endeavours.
 
Scotiabank Charity Challenge Final Update
On Sunday, June 25, our group of staff, board members, and families gathered to participate for a third time in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge 5K. Congratulations to Flora, Jessica and Lisa for winning the prizes as our top 3 fundraisers this year! And we have raised $5000 together as a team! Thank you to all those who participated and supported us financially for this run.

Introducing our Summer Students

Alice (left), Mij (right)

Mij is currently a 3rd year Psychology student at UBC. She has a lot of experience working with children, especially with improving their literacy, and creating arts and crafts with them. So, it makes sense that she is drawn to psychology topics such as child development. Mij works in the playroom as a Child and Family Support Assistant, helping run drop-in programs. She is very grateful to be working with awesome staff and meeting families at the Family Centre!

Alice is currently a 4th year International Relations major at UBC. Beginning her second month at the Family Centre as a Special Events Assistant, she is beyond excited to be here, working and interacting with all the lovely staff, families and children. She is truly thankful to be in a warm, supportive and multicultural environment. Alice's passions lie in French, helping others and learning new cultures and languages. She is looking forward to meeting you all!

Scotiabank Charity Challenge Update

 
 
On Sunday, June 25, about 25 people - staff, board members, and families - gathered to participate for a third time in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge 5K. Thank you to all those who participated and supported us financially for this run. Through this event, we have raised $4791 so far. You can still donate HERE until Monday, July 24th, or we also accept cheque/cash at the centre. Thank you for your ongoing your support!

Your Membership is Important!
Annual membership runs from May 1st to April 30th, and costs $45 per year. That is only 86 cents per weekIf you and your children enjoy coming to our centre, we would greatly appreciate your purchase/renewal of membership. 

Membership fees are a crucial part of our annual revenue to continue our Family Drop In program, parent education, worshops, special events and seasonal celebrations.

In order to meet our fundraising goal, we need 333 families to purchase/renew their membership. We are at approximately 100 memberships so far. We continue to accept payment via cash, cheque or credit card.

Playground Update
Please be aware that the gravel is very slippery. We are working on finding a solution to this problem. In the meantime, if any family member can donate some time to shove/sweep the gravel back in its place, please let us know. We have a shovel and some brooms readily available in the bike shed. As well, parents and caregivers should monitor/prevent the children dumping the gravel on the blue surface, wooden benches and walkway.

June 13, Tuesday: Both Morning & Afternoon Drop-In Graduation Day We celebrate all the children who will be attending Kindergarten this fall! A ceremony will be held and each child will be recognized. The Drop-In will remain open to the public, but play time will be shorter. This might not be the best day for families with very small children to attend. For more details, please talk to Maria or Ewa.
June 16, Friday: 9:30 - 11:30 AM Family Daycare Morning Family daycare providers are welcome to bring their kids for a special morning of playtime just for them! Please sign up with Maria or Ewa.
June 21, Wednesday: 11 AM - 1:30 PM National Aboriginal Day at Musqueam Meet us at Musqueam's Cultural Centre (4000 Musqueam Ave) to check out the day's festivities. For more information on the event, CLICK HEREIf you need transportation, please talk to staff as we have arranged a small bus with limited seating available. FAMILY DROP-IN WILL BE CLOSED ON THIS DAY.
June 30, Friday: 10 AM - 1 PM Canada Day Celebration Join us as we celebrate Canada turning 150 year old!  Crafts, face painting, and entertainment are just some of the fun festivities. Bring your own lunch and a picnic blanket.

Mount Pleasant Family Centre invites families with children 0 to 6 years old to become a member. Members are entitled to free drop-in programming, a supervised playroom, a comfortable space for adults to talk and meet other parents and caregivers, and much more.
