EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WINTER REPORT

March is a month when we feel that spring is around the corner and with it all the joy and anticipation of new beginnings. Personally, I am excited about March 7th when we host a new version of our annual fundraiser, Savour Our Neighbourhood, and we share a fun evening with many of our members and community partners.  Through this event the staff and Board enjoy being introduced to new friends and community members while we raise funds to support the many services we offer through our programs. This year we are fortunate to have over 40 silent auction items that have been donated to our cause as well as 4 fantastic live auction items that we will be offering at the event.  Our goal for the evening is to raise $20,000, so if you haven’t bought your tickets, there is still time….just click here Tickets

And once again, I hope to see you there!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WINTER REPORT

The first month of 2019 is now behind us…the weather is sketchy and we have all been somewhat impacted by the recent lunar eclipse.  For fun let’s see what google has to say….. “Like a regular full moon only stronger, a lunar eclipse focuses attention on your emotions, intimate relationships, and your home and family. A total lunar eclipse has an even stronger influence on your private life. Qualities of emotions and instincts reach their peak at a lunar eclipse. This lets you take an objective and balanced look at your close relationships. Because you will be in touch with your own needs and intentions, you will clearly see any relationship imbalances causing disharmony”.

But remember, no matter how you are feeling, the Family Drop in staff are here to support you!

In fact, the coming month will be filled with lots of activity at the Family Centre that you can read about in the paragraph below.  The Early Years Refugee Program will be welcoming 12 new families with 23 children to the Welcome House and providing each family with support as they transition to a new life in Canada.

In an effort to raise funds to support these valuable programs the Board and staff are planning our 6th annual Savour Our Neighbourhood fundraiser that will take place March 7th at the Heritage Hall and I encourage you to attend.  This will be a fun filled evening with lots laughs, stories and celebration.

I hope to see you there!

With Kind Regards,
Gini Bonner, ED MPFCS

Board Member of the Month
Jessica has been working and supporting young children and families, in various child care settings, for over 25 years.  Working with young children helps to keep her grounded in the present moment and engaged in spontaneous learning opportunities.  She is currently working at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House with their Early Years and Out of School Care Programs.  She has a deep respect and appreciation for her personal practice of Yoga and Tai Chi.  These internal arts help her to strive towards wellness and deeper personal connections with those she meets and engages with on a day to day basis. Jessica is the proud parent of two young boys and experienced firsthand the wonderful support and enrichment MPFCS brought to her and her family.  She is grateful for the opportunity to be on the board of the MPFCS - helping to foster creative, vibrant and strong individuals, families and communities.
Unfortunately for us, Jessica will be leaving our Board at the end of the month.  She and her family will be moving to a new community outside of Vancouver proper! MPFCS Board and staff wish Jessica all the best a on this new adventure. She will be missed!

Staff Member of the Month
Gini Bonner

I have been the Executive Director of Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society since 2012.  However, my history with Family Resources Programs extends back to the early 90’s when I was the Family Support Worker at South Vancouver Family Place. I have a lovely blended family consisting of 2 adult daughters and one son.  My life partner Paul Iverson, is a musician and guitar repair man and we have lived in Deep Cove, North Vancouver for the past 25 years.  In my professional life, I have always worked  in Vancouver and have found this to be a positive choice allowing me to debrief my work life during the sometimes long journey home! I am a hatha yoga teacher and have practiced Iyengar yoga for nearly 35 years!  However, in recent years I have become a kundalini practitioner and find that this practice has elevated my dedication and devotion to all aspects of my life!

I have a proven record of success, providing family support and leadership in the delivery of community based services and I have a keen understanding of the importance of establishing a welcoming environment that fosters personal dignity, validation and respect.

My professional goal is to use my skills to ensure parents, caregivers and children can learn, play and share together in an informal and nurturing family centered environment, supported by experienced Family Resource Practitioners and Early Years Settlement Workers. And my ultimate personal goal is to contribute to a society where children are thriving, families are resilient and communities are well connected.

Board Update

October 16th we hosted our AGM and voted in our new and returning Board of Directors who immediately got to work reviewing our organizational mission, vision and values and began to envision our strategic direction for the next three years. During this process the Board identified that our mission is very much on track and that our strategies to achieve our mission have withstood the test of time. It was very satisfying to hear from staff, stories of success and to reaffirm that family centered support services are truly effective. As we plan for the future, the Board will be prioritizing our organizational goals and I will be strategizing with the staff how to achieve them.  Please feel free to contribute your ideas by sending me an email -  This email address is being protected from spambots.
