Canada Day 2016

This year's Canada Day celebration was spectacular! Many families came and checked out all the festivities such as craft making, face painting, sing-a-longs and the food. Jenny Kwan, MP for the Vancouver-Mount Pleasant riding, also came by to say some kind words to our families and assisted in the Canada Day cake cutting. Thank you to all our volunteers, neighbourhood supporters and performers. Special thanks to BC Mobile Dairy Classroom, Vancouver Public Library and the Vancouver Police Department.

We will be saying goodbye to our three lovely summer students as of August 19. July at the Family Centre

Welcome Theresa!
Theresa is originally from the Kootenays and has worked in the non-profit community for over 15 years. She has experience in creating and implementing programs for various target audiences on a provincial and community level. Her passion lies in helping people and making a positive contribution within her community. Her most recent job catered to children and their families with a focus on community programming, as well as, childhood developmental disabilities. She is a mother of 2 young kids and lives in the Mount Pleasant area. In her spare time, she likes to bike, garden and spend time with friends and family. She looks forward to her new role at MPFCS and meeting new friends.

Welcome Summer Students!
Michelle is currently a 4th year student at UBC. When she was younger she regularly attended Mount Pleasant Family Centre and is very happy to be able to contribute to the Centre that gave her very memorable experiences.

Kara strives to support healthy growth and development of babies and toddlers at the Family Centre through organizing and implementing interactive activities with the children and their caregivers. She enjoys her work at the Family Centre, as it gives her opportunities to establish meaningful connections with the culturally diverse groups of parents and children.

Joanna is excited to be able to interact with toddlers and families to support healthy development this summer. She hopes to meet as many of the families as she can, so be sure to drop in sometime!

Charity Challenge Update

On Sunday, June 26, about 20 people - staff, board members, and families - gathered to participate for a second time in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge 5K and half-marathon. This race is a great way for charities to fundraise and participate in a well-organized event. So far this year, we have raised $4,460, which will be used to purchase additional equipment for our NEW PLAYGROUND (rebuild happening in the fall).

If you missed the opportunity to make a donation, don't worry! We can continue to receive donations until July 25. Simply go to our blog and follow the link to donate.

Letter from our Storyteller!
Dear parents and children of the Mount Pleasant Family Centre. As some of you know, I have been commissioned to write a story celebrating MPFC’s 40 years of supporting families in the neighbourhood. The process of researching and interviewing has begun in a lovely way, and a few recent ABC graduates and alumni will be participating in October’s storytelling performance! I look forward to meeting you all then. – Naomi Steinberg, storyteller

Crows Love Strollers
We have a couple of clever crows who regularly steal food out of the strollers parked outside the Family Centre. Please do not leave food in your stroller!

Riding Your Bike to the Drop-In?
Please park and lock your bike on the outside of the fence around the playground. This reduces the congestion around the outdoor play areas.

Books for Sale!
We have the distinct pleasure of selling Deborah MacNamara's new book, Rest, Play, Grow. Deborah is senior faculty at the Neufeld institute. The book is based on the popular Neufeld course "Making Sense of Preschoolers" which we offer here at the centre twice a year.
The book is $20, payable by cash or cheque,  Family Centre receives $8 from each sale.
Here's an excerpt of a description of the book from Dr. MacNamara's website:
"Based on science and the relational developmental approach of renowned psychologist and bestselling author Gordon Neufeld, Rest, Play, Grow reveals how adults have a critical role to play in creating the conditions for young children to flourish. This is the story of how young children develop, from their intense need for attachment and the vital importance of play to discipline that preserves growth. Engagingly written, with compassion for its subjects and rich with stories from them and their parents, Rest, Play, Grow will forever change the way you think of the preschoolers in your life."

Scotiabank Charity Challenge: Get Moving and Support the Family Centre!

Here's another way you can support us! Please join the Mount Pleasant Family Centre as we run and walk in the Scotiabank Half-Marathon and 5K. Many of the staff and board members are walking to raise money for our beloved Family Centre. The additional funding we receive can be used for more parent education programs or for improvements to our playground. You know how important these things are for families! We hope you will join our team in support of our commitment to providing safe welcoming spaces for families with little children.

There are two ways you can support us - if you want to get your groove on and join us in the Challenge, go to our website, www.mpfamilycentre.ca and register. Use the code16VMPFC to receive a discounted registration fee.

Special Thanks to Carrie!
Carrie Cassidy has been with us Mondays - Wednesdays since the beginning of April as a Counselling Practicum student. We value her sensitive support for parents, as well as her willingness to share her  expertise and connections to resources for Atypical children. Carrie will be here until mid-June, so be sure to drop in and wish her well on her journey into counselling!

And now, on to June...

June 14, Tuesday: Both Morning & Afternoon Drop-Ins Graduation Day This is the day we celebrate all the children who will be attending kindergarten in the fall! We hold a ceremony outside in the grass and each "graduate" is recognized. The drop-in will still be open to the public, but play time will be shorter. There will be many people attending and more time for sitting still. This might not be the best day for families with very small children to attend. If you have a child entering kindergarten who regularly comes to the Family Centre, please check with Maria or Ewa to find out more details.
June 17 & 24, Fridays: 9:30 - 11:30 AM Family Daycare Mornings Family daycare providers are welcome to bring their kids for a special morning of playtime just for them! Please sign up in advance with Ewa or Maria.

Outdoor Fun  We continue to encourage parents to enjoy outdoor play with their children. Our bikes, cars and diggers are available from 9-3:30, 9-noon on Thursday. Now that we are getting more sun, please remember that we have a shady yard with blankets and toys for cooler fun!

Goodbye Sarah
Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society is known and respected in the community for our innovative and professional work. However, we are much than a place for programs….we are a place for people and not just any people, but caring, kind, enthusiastic people including Sarah Holcomb, our Family Drop in Team Lead and Family Support Worker.

It is with sadness and also appreciation that I am announcing that as of July , Sarah and her family are moving away from Vancouver and onto new life experiences and adventures. During Sarah’s time at Mount Pleasant Family Drop in, Sarah has given generously of herself and sincerely supported the success of the organization through her excellent leadership, her willingness to tackle new projects and her keen interest in exploring new skills. In addition, Sarah has helped to develop our very successful annual fundraiser, Savour Our Neighbourhood, hosting the event for two years running, and hopefully back as our guest host in 2017!

Sarah has become a good friend to all who have had the pleasure of working with her and I know our Board and our participant families will miss her friendly face and warm welcome!

Please join us in wishing Sarah and her family all the best on their new adventures and let her know she will be remembered!
Gini Bonner
Executive Director MPFCS

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to give Sarah a heartfelt thank you for being such a wonderful presence at the Family Centre. She was a big part in making Savour Our Neighbourhood successful, helped design our Strategic Planning process, increased our social media presence, and was a pleasure to work with.

I know we parents will all miss our time with Sarah at the drop-in – her upbeat presence, way of connecting with the children, compassion and sense of humour. I personally always appreciated having conversations with Sarah about parenting. She has slightly older children, which means she remembers those toddler and preschool years well, and also has insight into the next stage of parenting! Always valuable.

Thank you for all the baby-holding, zippers zipped up, shoes put on, and meltdowns soothed. We will miss you!
Marnie Watson
Chair of the Board of Directors, MPFCS

Making sense of these confusing yet wondrous creatures lays the foundation for intuitive and fruitful interaction with them. Flora will facilitate the course which runs six Friday mornings.

Parent as Provider
When you sign-in at the family centre, we are now encouraging the adults to take responsibility for putting the piece of fruit they have brought to share on the fruit plate, as well as for putting money in the donation box. We recognize that there are a variety of reasons adults might want to include their children in these steps, however, providing food and monetary support are the adult's job. Also, much of the fruit gets damaged - either from being dropped or squeezed before getting on the plate!

Label Those Coats!
Even though you might know exactly what your child's coat looks like and exactly where you left it in the boot room, there might be another family who has the same exact coat (or boots, etc.) even though they are in a different size. So many children wear outerwear from the same shops, it can get confusing! If everyone puts their last name and phone number in their child's coat, then if there is an accidental swap, there is a way of contacting the other family. Even just a piece of masking tape inside the jacket or near the top of the boots will work for a while.

Repair Person Needed!
The Family Centre has a number of small repairs that need to be addressed, and all our volunteer repair people have "graduated" from our program. If you have tools, time, and feel confident that you could fix a couple of doors, strengthen a desk, and sand and refinish a hand rail, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
