June Newsletter

Written by Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society
Executive Director’s Summer Report
June, July and August at the Family Drop in and the Early Years Refugee Program are generally quieter months for our programs.  However, we also host several fun outdoor celebrations that we invite all families to participate, including a Canada Day celebration, Aboriginal Day outing, and a summer picnic in Robson Park.  During the month of June we will welcome Anna, this year’s summer student who comes highly recommended by Reneet our summer student from last year.  Anna will be with us for 8 weeks, spending 3 days week at the Early Years Refugee Program and 2 days at the Family Drop-In.  Please join me in welcoming her to our MP Family Centre Society staff family.
In other news we are pleased to report that the new MCFD funded, Creekside Baby Drop-In program, co facilitated by Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and Mount Pleasant Family Centre Society staff is busy and running smoothly. Looking forward, I would like to invite all those interested in joining our Board of Directors to contact me directly at

I remember the first time I walked in to the family centre with my first born daughter. Everyone was so warm welcoming. That daughter just turned 30 and my connection to the family centre has grown as well over those years. After my second daughter was born I joined the board of directors to help support the centre any way I could.
By then I realized their support for my family had become integral to our well being!
Instead of returning to work in nursing I began training as a parent facilitator running the  parenting program, Nobody's Perfect, a wonderful program that helps parents feel less isolated and more confident in their parenting.
Soon I was working part time at the drop in program, and part time at the local school. In the interest of supporting parents more effectively,I began counselor training.
As the parent committee chair at my daughters' school. I brought in Dr Gordon Neufeld to talk to parents.
Keen about his developmental approach and theories of attachment, I enrolled at the Neufeld Institute and now I facilitate those courses for parents at the centre. The most popular one being 'Making Sense of Preschoolers' which is very enlightening about the most common tripping points for parents in the early years.
A more recent training has been Circle of Security Parenting Program. It helps parents identify what their children need and how to support the parent-child relationship.
Having an opportunity to help parents learning over several weeks makes these programs very satisfying.
One of our newest drop in programs is the Thursday afternoon infant program which I do with Alma. We just love meeting all the first time parents and small babies.
I feel lucky to be able to learn and grow with the family centre and all the wonderful families who join our community.
